We were sitting on the lakeshore, my husband, Töki, and I. My hand was buried in the dog's grey, curling fur, feeling her soft coat. I smiled as we watched the wild ducks take off from the lake's mirror-like surface and songbirds bidding farewell to the day. I felt our dog pressing warmly against me. She always wanted to be a single dog, but it was never granted to her. Except for moments like these. I looked at her. Her intelligent gaze was fixed on the lake, but it was obvious she wasn’t focused on the birds, but smiling inside, enjoying the moment. I knew that this was an eternal moment for her too. A moment that etches itself into memory, like the lines of an etching into a copper plate. It will remain just as vivid among our memories, even when we are no longer together. Forever, unchangeably.
